Description
The Freckled Hawkfish, also known as Forster's Hawkfish or Blackside Hawkfish, undergoes color changes several times during its lifetime. It can be golden brown, like in this photo, but also white-red-brown. Its name is in latin Paracirrhites forsteri.
Found usually singly, but can be seen in pairs or in harems, perched on corals and rocks over clear soft bottoms of lagoons and seaward reefs.
They feed on crustaceans and small fish.
Max length is 8 inches / 22 cm.
The large stony coral on the right side is the Goniastrea Edwardsi. It grows as large as 3,5 feet / 1 meter. Color is pale tan to pink. It has small deep calices, usually with a diameter of 0.12–0.16 inches / 3–4 millimeters. It obtains most of its nutritional needs from the symbiotic dinoflagellates that live inside its soft tissues. These photosynthetic organisms provide the coral with organic carbon and nitrogen, sometimes providing up to 90% of their host's energy needs for metabolism and growth. Its remaining needs are met by the planktonic organisms caught by the tentacles of the polyps.
